Algaida

The municipality, in the southwest of Pla de Mallorca, is the largest in the region and includes the towns of Algaida, Pina and Randa. The area has a rather flat landscape, except for the mountainous area of the massif of Randa, which has a great scenic and natural value.

In the main core of Algaida, several places stand out: the parish church of Sant Pere and Sant Pau, of gothic style with baroque influences; the wayside crosses made of stone, which formerly marked the limits of the town and the flour windmills, a typical image of Algaida. In Pina: the parish church of Sant Cosme and Sant Damià, from the 19th century; the convent of the Germanes Franciscanes and the fountain with the covered wash house. And in the llogaret (village) of Randa: the parish church of Immaculada Concepció and beato Ramon Llull, from the 18th century, the fountain and the wash house.

From Randa you can follow the route to the sanctuary of Cura, at the top of the mountain, 543 meters high. From the observatory of Cura you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the island. There is a restaurant, guest house and a museum dedicated to the figure of Ramon Llull (Mallorca, 1232-1316), one of the most important scholars of medieval times. The mountain of Randa is also known as the “sacred mountain” as there are two more shrines, Sant Honorat and Nostra Senyora de Gràcia.

In Algaida you will find the Gordiola factory of glass blowing, founded in the year 1719. Gordiola is one of the only two production centres of glass blowing, with a historical tradition, which is still active in Spain. At the factory you can buy household utensils, such as cups, glasses, vases, lamps, flower vases, etc., in addition to taking a guided tour of the factory and learning about the ancient technique of glass blowing, which requires great skill and dexterity. There is also a museum with collections of ancient glasses, glasses from other countries and pieces made by Gordiola over the years.

Regarding the festivities and traditions, the traditional dance of the cossiers stands out. These are ancestral dances of uncertain origin, but were already documented in the 14th century. The Algaida's Cosssiers dance only twice a year: on January 16th, the day of Sant Honorat, patron saint of the town, and on Sant Jaume, on July 25th. In the festivities of Sant Jaume, as well as the cossiers, there are many other activities: craft market, fireworks, musical performances, etc.
