The capital of wine

In the heart of the Raiguer region, the municipality of Binissalem is known for its close relationship with wine

Binissalem is part of the Binissalem Designation of Origin wine region and has numerous wine cellars, which can be visited (with prior reservation) and usually offer tastings and guided tours. The grape harvest, a symbol of Mediterranean culture, is a very important event in the municipality. In September, the Festa des Vermar (Grape Harvest Festival) is celebrated with an extensive programme of activities, including workshops, exhibitions, parades, grapes crushing and popular dances.

Another important event is the Fira de la Pedra (Stone Fair) held in May. The fair is an excellent opportunity to discover another distinctive feature of this municipality: stone working. There are live demonstrations and exhibitions of works such as sculptures, fountains, constructions, etc.

In terms of heritage, the centre of Binissalem constitutes one of the most remarkable architectural complexes in Mallorca, declared a historical site in 1983. The parish church of Nostra Senyora de Robines and the group of manor houses dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries stand out. Some of these houses can be visited, such as Can Gelabert de la Portella, where the writer Llorenç Moyà (1916-1981) lived, and Can Sabater, the Binissalem residence of the writer Llorenç Villalonga (1897-1980), one of the best exponents of Mallorcan fiction of the 20th century.
