Back Carnival

Carnival

Carnival in Mallorca is also known as Darrers dies (Last days), referring to the last days when meat can be eaten according to Catholic precepts before the start of Lent.

The festival begins on Fat Thursday and lasts until the weekend, when parades of people in fancy dress, known as Rues, take place. During this weekend, it is customary for people to go out at night in fancy dress. To end on a cheerful note, in some places the Enterrament de la sardina (Burial of the Sardine) is celebrated, which traditionally takes place on the eve of Ash Wednesday, during which a crowd of people dressed in mourning attire reenact the burial of a sardine. This marks the end of the Carnival celebrations and the beginning of Lent.
