Deià

An Artist village

This picturesque village is located in the heart of the mountains. The exclusive location, the beauty of the landscape and the charm of the traditional stone buildings have made it a special place for numerous writers, painters and artists who have found Deià a source of inspiration: from the Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, to the writer Robert Graves, the composer Manuel de Falla, the painters Leman, Junyer and Russinyol or, among others, the poets Robert Grabas and Laura Riding.

Even today, the village retains a bohemian atmosphere that charms and envelops anyone who decides to spend some time in this enclave. The light of this place is magical. Not surprisingly, many celebrities and personalities make this area their holiday destination in Majorca, staying in some of the most exclusive hotels on the island. 

The most interesting attractions include: the House of Robert Graves, residence of the English writer, author, among other works, of the novel I, Claudius; the church and cemetery at the top of the hill, with splendid panoramic views reached via steep roads; the Archaeological Museum, founded in 1962 by the American archaeologist William Waldren and the Parish Museum. 

The surrounding areas are ideal for hiking. There are numerous routes that can be taken on foot, such as the walk to Cala Deià or the village of Llucalcari, or even the hike to the peninsula of sa Foradada. The GR-221 trail also passes through this place and the Can Boi hut is an ideal choice for people crossing the Serra de Tramuntana. 

Cala Deià is a small rocky cove with crystal clear waters that can also be reached by car, very popular with both locals and tourists.

The route to Deià winds along a suggestive but narrow and winding road, with the sea and the horizon as a backdrop and various stages and rest stops, often causing the trip to be extended, even involuntarily, without you even realising it. Recommended stops include, for example: the ancient monastery of Miramar; Son Marroig, an estate that belonged to Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria and its viewpoint on sa Foradada, a rock formation with a huge hole 18 metres in diameter. 

This charm of this place makes it very popular. The limited parking must be taken into consideration when planning a trip.
