Back Sant Antoni

Sant Antoni

On 17 January, the most popular and participatory festival of the winter is celebrated: Sant Antoni. One of the most eagerly awaited moments is the appearance of the demons, which marks the start of the Sant Antoni festival on the 16th. Accompanied by traditional music, the demons dance in every corner of the villages. At dusk, foguerons (bonfires) are lit in the main streets of the villages. Everyone gathers around the foguerons to eat typical products such as sobrasada, botifarrons, longaniza or espinagades to the sound of popular songs and gloses. On the 17th, the patron saint's day of animals, the beneïdes de Sant Antoni take place, with parades of floats, high mass and the blessing of animals to place them under the patronage of the saint.

In Pollença, El Pi de Sant Antoni is celebrated. The tradition consists of going to the Ternelles estate to fetch a pine tree. After lunch, volunteers carry it to the Old Square in Pollença, where it is soaped and planted. Then the young people compete for the honour of being the first to climb to the top of the pine tree.
