Fornalutx
One of the most beautiful villages in Spain
Surrounded by lemon and orange groves, you will find this small mountain village. Located near the town of Sóller, its history has always been linked to that of the neighbouring town as up until 1813 they were one town.
The village has received several national awards for its conservation and landscape protection work, and in 2017 it was recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. The people that live there strive to maintain the style and atmosphere of the past, with its stone houses and cobbled streets.
The old olive-oil mill of Can Xoroi is one of the most interesting elements of the village. There is a permanent exhibition of old painted tiles there. The tiles were painted on site, with geometric designs, plant motifs, zoomorphic figures, religious scenes or scenes from everyday life. This popular art and the custom of ornamenting the overhangs spread during the 16th century, and Sóller and Fornalutx are where the largest number of buildings with painted roof tiles are preserved.
Being in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, Fornalutx offers numerous trails and excursions, such as the Camí de s'Alzina Fumadora, the Camí de Binibassí, the Camí de sa Costera and the Camí des Creuer.
Fornalutx has a number of more family-friendly places to stay for those who want a quiet holiday. Several cafés and restaurants (some of them serving traditional Mallorcan food) are available for visitors who decide to come here.
Access to the village can be difficult at times. The streets are narrow and at times there can be quite a lot of traffic. There is controlled parking available for visitors at the two entrances to the village.
