The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Festivity
DORMITION AND COMMEMORATIVE DEATH BEDS
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary (15th August) is the most significant religious summer festival throughout the Mediterranean. In Mallorca, it has been celebrated in a special way since the 15th century, comprising a series of rituals, performances and conventions accompanying the mystery of the Virgin Mary's death, assumption and coronation.
Around this date, Mallorca's churches and convents contain displays consisting of a parish bed or burial mound, guarded by angels, typically completed with canopies and curtains where you can see a sleeping Virgin Mary, which, according to Catholics, will later be transported to heaven. Traditional plants such as the beautiful mirabelle plum and fragrant basil usually accompany this scene. You can also see stunning floral displays.
