Parc natural de la península de Llevant

The Llevant Peninsula Natural Park, located in the north-east of the island, is a natural stronghold that has survived urban development. It is an area of great landscape value and diversity of habitats. It occupies an area of 1,671 hectares and belongs to Natura 2000, the European Union's network of protected areas.

The preserved landscapes include part of the Llevant mountain range where the maximum height does not exceed 600 metres. The wild vegetation is mostly scrubland type, in which the European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) and the Mauritania grass (Ampelodesmos mauritanica) predominate. The leaves of the European fan palm are still used today for the artisan production of baskets and other elements (work of the palm or "llata"), an activity deeply rooted in this area of Mallorca.

The landscape also alternates crops of olives, almonds, figs and carob trees, which emerge among some pine forests. The sea is also the protagonist and in the area we will find some hidden coves, as well as cliffs in the natural reserve of Cap Ferrutx.

There are a high number of endemic species in the area. With regard to flora, the most notable are the Balearic St. John's wort (Hypericum balearicum) and the Teucrium marum subsp. occidentale, a cushion-like shrub. As for the endemic fauna, the Balearic warbler (Sylvia balearica) stands out. Other birds that can be observed in the park are: the booted eagle, the peregrine falcon, the Egyptian vulture, the red kite, the Audouin's gull and the European shag. The Hermann's tortoise is also abundant in the park.

The park can only be visited on foot or by bicycle. The park office and information centre are located in the building of s'Alqueria Vella de Baix, near the village of Artà, where there is also a car park. There is no complementary service throughout the park.

In the different itineraries we will find some architectural remains such as watchtowers, a camp of republican prisoners of the Civil War and several old estates, now converted into shelters. There is also a camping area.

It is not allowed to enter with any type of domestic animal, except with guide dogs and horses (with prior authorisation).
