Parc natural de s'Albufera de Mallorca
S'Albufera de Mallorca is the most extensive and important wetland on the island. A wetland of almost 1,700 hectares, it is located in the northern part of the island and is a valuable ecosystem for migratory birds.
Originally, it was a lake separated from the sea by a line of dunes, which was covered with sediments to form an extensive floodplain. The natural park is also part of the Natura 2000 network of the European Union and is a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).
The biological wealth of s'Albufera is based on its water. Its presence allows the continuous growth of vegetation, which changes depending on the depth of the wetland, the type of terrain and the proximity of the sea. Bullrushes abound (Typha angustifolia) as well as reeds (Phragmites australis) and rushes. Among the trees, we find poplars, elms and tamarisks (Tamarix spp.).
The fauna is varied and abundant in species: fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, etc. But what really stands out in s'Albufera are the birds. More than 300 species have been observed and, in winter, thousands of waterfowl remain in the park's lagoons. In addition, the wetland is a point of great importance for migratory birds.
Access to the park can only be done on foot or by bicycle. The entry of motor vehicles is not allowed, except for people with reduced mobility. You can make different itineraries throughout the park, which is fully signposted. Several of them have hides and platforms to better observe the birds.
At the entrance to the park we find the Sa Roca Information Centre and the Can Bateman Interpretation Centre, where an audiovisual is projected. The parking lot is next to the road, approximately one kilometre from the Information Centre. Within the park there is no type of complementary service. It is advisable to bring mosquito repellent lotion, especially in spring and summer.
