Sencelles
Inland municipality belonging to the Pla de Mallorca region. This municipality is one of the largest in the region. In addition to the village of Sencelles, the main nucleus, it includes the llogarets (hamlets) of Biniali, Jornets, Cascanar and Ruberts. The set of llogarets is one of the main attractions of the municipality, both for the rural and traditional architecture of the buildings and for the legacy they represent, the rural Mallorca of yesteryear.
In Sencelles, the following stand out: the parish church of Sant Pere, from the end of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century; the rectory, a stately home dating from the 15th to the 17th century; the old houses, both those of popular traditional architecture and stately ones; the flour windmills and the terminus crosses, monumental crosses made of marès (sandstone) that formerly marked the limits of the town.
In Biniali, the second most populated village in the municipality with the highest number of inhabitants, some 250, and declared a historical site, the following are outstanding: the parish church of Sant Cristòfol, the rectory and adjacent houses; the monument to the Immaculada Concepción; the group of houses of traditional architecture, most of which date from the late 17th and early 18th centuries; and the small, picturesque cemetery.
The others llogarets, Jornets, Ruberts and Cascanar are also very interesting sets. In particular, Jornets and Ruberts were declared historical sites for their heritage values. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the llogarets were centres of great agricultural activity, specifically the cultivation of vines, and former settlements of peasants who worked on the large estates. The phylloxera plague, in the mid-19th century, led to the collapse of the wine sector and the gradual abandonment of winegrowing. Today the tradition has been completely restored and it can be said that Sencelles is a land of vineyards.
The municipality of Sencelles is full of archaeological remains. To discover this valuable heritage, you can follow the Sencelles - Costitx Archaeological Route. The 12-kilometre route, which links six sites, is marked and can be done on foot or by bicycle. The tour involves a journey through Mallorca's prehistory and the discovery of the Talayotic culture, the best-known period of prehistory on the island (900 in 500 BC) because of its monumental architecture. Among the sites, the talaiot of Son Fred (megalithic construction) stands out as one of the largest and best-preserved on the island.
As for festivities and traditions, in February, on the 5th, the festivity of the town's patron saint, Santa Àgueda, is celebrated, and on the 27th, a floral offering is held to commemorate the death of the Blessed Sister Francinaina Cirer, a nun born in Sencelles in 1781 and highly venerated in Mallorca. In honor of the Beata, a pilgrimage is also held on the second Sunday of May. On this day Sencelles is decorated to welcome the pilgrims who come to the village, from the llogaret de sa Casa Blanca, on foot, on horseback or in adorned carriages. And on the third Sunday in May, the Fira Major (main fair) takes place, with a market of typical and organic produce, handicraft objects, an exhibition of farming tools, etc. In Biniali, the Fira dels Jocs Tradicionals (Traditional Games Fair) is held in June, an opportunity to discover the most popular and traditional games of the island.
